The Martha’s Vineyard Social Justice Leadership Foundation, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, incorporated in October 2013.

Mission: To empower island groups and individuals to transform racial and social injustices through grantmaking, education, advocacy.

Vision: A fair and just island for all.

The foundation makes grants to island organizations who want to pursue an innovative program or project that underscore our Mission and accentuates our Vision for A fair and just island for all. Nonprofit organizations that qualify for public charity status per 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code are eligible for grants.

Endeavors must be island specific. Our foundation grant cycle begins March 31. A completed application must be submitted online by midnight April 30with no exceptions. Upon submitting an online application, you will receive a computer-generated reply receipt. Upon preliminary review, if we find missing data or have any questions needing clarification or elaboration, you will receive an email of either concern as soon as practicable.  You can expect notice of a decision concerning your grant application no later than July 16. Note: we do not make multi-year grants, although we may fund the same organization on a year-by-year basis over several years.

The foundation does not make grants for the following purposes.

  • Computers or software
  • Audio or video equipment
  • Gardening programs or equipment
  • Individuals for any purpose
  • Political lobbying activities or other political purposes
  • Private foundations
  • Dinners, balls, or other ticketed events
  • Purposes outside of the foundation’s funding priorities, as mentioned above.

Other than legal requirements, the above list is not absolute and may not always apply, but they provide some guidance about our interests. Note, conditional on the type of grant effort, MVSJLF may require an intellectual property contract that will become an integral part of the MVSLJF Grant Agreement and applies to all Grants provided by MVSJLF0
