SUMMARY:Summer Speaker Event: A Conversation with Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley
DESCRIPTION:Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley is an activist\, a legislator\, a survivor\, and the first woman of color to be elected to Congress from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Throughout her career as a public servant\, Congresswoman Pressley has fought to ensure that those closest to the pain are closest to the power – driving and informing policymaking. In Congress\, Rep. Pressley has been a champion for justice for all: for immigrants\, for ageing Americans\, for workers\, for survivors\, for the formerly and currently incarcerated\, for racial justice\, reproductive justice\, transportation and housing justice\, and more. And she has consistently shared her own story\, including her alopecia diagnosis\, in order to create space for others. Congresswoman Pressley serves on two powerful Congressional committees – the House Committee on Oversight and Reform and the House Committee on Financial Services – both of which have remained focused on legislatively addressing issues of care\, concern\, and consequence to the American people. Prior to being elected to Congress in 2018\, she served on the Boston City Council for 8 years\, and was the first woman of color elected to the council in its 100-year history.\n\nThis event will be livestreamed at https://www.mvcma.org/live-stream.html

SUMMARY:Public Forum Confederate Plaques on OB Civil War Monument
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, May 21st 6PM – 8PM\n\n\nOak Bluffs Elementary School Cafeteria\n\n\n50 Tradewinds Drive\n\n\nOak Bluffs\, MA \n\n\n \n\n\nWe encourage everyone to come out and make their opinion heard regarding the removal of Confederate plaques on the Oak Bluffs Civil War Monument. The Soldiers’ Memorial Fountain was commissioned in 1891 by Charles Strahan\, a Confederate veteran and a publisher of the Martha’s Vineyard Herald. The plaque on the statue was put up in 1925 (two weeks after the largest march of 50\,000 hooded Klu Klux Klan members on Washington\, DC). As an organization\, the Marthas Vineyard Social Justice Leadership Foundation supports the MV NAACP in their request to remove these plaques and place them in the Martha’s Vineyard Museum.\n\n\n \n\n\nThe forum will begin with remarks from selectmen chairman Brian Packish before going into a historical perspective presentation from museum research librarian A. Bowdoin Van Riper. Public comment and discussion will follow before selectmen deliberate and take a potential vote. Here is a link to the background documents and timeline that has been posted on the town website:\n\nBackground and Timeline\nhttps://www.oakbluffsma.gov/354/Civil-War-Monument\n\nAgenda\nhttps://www.oakbluffsma.gov/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Agenda/_05212019-2346\n\nMVSJLF Letter of Support of NAACP Request for Plaque Removal\nhttps://vineyardgazette.com/news/2019/04/25/chasm-not-closed\n\n\n\nIf you cannot attend\, send an email with your comments to office administrator Alice Butler at abutler@oakbluffsma.gov

SUMMARY:Spettacolo - TMVFF Dinner and Movie 5:00
DESCRIPTION:Dirs. Jeff Malmberg and Christina Shellen | Documentary | U.S.A. / Italy | 2017 | 89 min.\nItalian\, with English subtitles \nThis is the true story of a tiny Tuscan town that confronts its issues by turning them into a play. For fifty years\, the villagers have transformed their piazza into a stage\, taking on roles of themselves in an alternate\, theatrical reality in which they discuss their difficulties and explore solutions. Filming entirely in Italy\, MVFF alumnus Jeff Malmberg (Marwencol) weaves present-day vérité footage with 46 years of archival film and photographs. As in a novel\, every chapter functions as a puzzle piece\, filling in the details of each character\, illuminating hidden facets\, and finally telling a story about the importance of culture\, community\, and everything we leave behind as we move forward.\n“Lovely and elegiac.”\n– Sheri Linden\, The Hollywood Reporter\n\n\n\n\n\nMembers $5  /  General Admission $10\n*NEW THIS YEAR* couch seats are available for a $5 upgrade\nWork on Martha’s Vineyard? SUMMARY:TAKE MY NOSE... PLEASE! - TMVFF Movie Dinner & Live Music at 6:30 PM
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Joan Kron  | Documentary | U.S.A. | 2017 | 99 min. \nNobody delivers the truth like comedians. And so\, who better to draw back the curtain on the often hush-hush subject of plastic surgery? Award-winning journalist Joan Kron\, a first-time film director at age 89\, follows two comedians as they deliberate about going under the knife. Emily Askin\, an up-and-coming improv performer\, has always wanted her nose refined. Jackie Hoffman\, a seasoned headliner on Broadway\, regrets turning down a nose job she was offered in her teens. Taking a comedic and insightful route\, this film seeks to better understand how women are pressured to adhere to society’s arbitrary and often absurd standards of beauty.\n“An excellent documentary that takes a subject some might\nfind innocuous and turns it into something marvelous.”\n– Carlos deVillalvilla\, Cinema365\n\n\n\n\n\nMembers $10  /  General Admission $20\n*NEW THIS YEAR* couch seats are available for a $5 upgrade\nWork on Martha’s Vineyard? SUMMARY:Historical Talk Presented by Tom Dunlop
DESCRIPTION:Tom Dunlop presents “The First Church of Martha’s Vineyard – Turning Its Back on Main Street”\n\n\nA schism inspired the building of Edgartown’s historic Federated Church. Prosperity determined which way it would face. In honor of the church’s 375th anniversary and in conjunction with the Spotlight exhibit celebrating the church’s history\, Island historian Tom Dunlop will explain how religious turmoil and a financial boom-and-bust in the first half of the nineteenth century led from Cooke and Summer Streets directly to the modern era of resorthood on Martha’s Vineyard. Reception to follow back at the Museum.

SUMMARY:SEA OF HOPE TMVFF - Free Outdoor Screening! Dinner & Music at 7:00 PM
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Robert Nixon | Documentary | U.S.A. | 2017 | 47 min. \nToo often we overlook the fact that harm done to the ocean is harm done to ourselves. Iconic ocean explorer and conservationist Dr. Sylvia Earle embarks on a quest to inspire the next generation of conservationists\, scientists\, and activists so that “no child is left dry\,” as she likes to say. The ultimate goal? To bring about the creation of “blue parks” in what is an imperiled\, and still mostly unseen\, American underwater wilderness.\n“Captures the dazzling beauty of its ocean locales\, both above and\nbeneath the surface\, while soberly reminding us of\nthe crucial ecological issues—and solutions—at hand.”\n– Gary Goldstein\, Los Angeles Times\n\n\n\n\n\nThis screening is free for all!\n \nThank you to the screening sponsor The Beach Plum Inn\, Menemsha Inn\, and Homeport \nCo-presented by the Sargent Gallery and the Fund for Wild Nature
